When friends, family or co-workers come together to toast special occasions, what is in the raised glasses might surprise you. Some people are choosing not to consume alcoholic beverages. Perhaps they have become more health conscious and are increasingly aware of not only what they eat and how often they exercise, but also what they drink. Others may be complying with their doctor's advice regarding health conditions or medication side effects, or they have assumed the all-important role of designated driver.

It has become increasingly important when hosting any social function to provide guests with non-alcoholic options. These beverages need not be boring; they can be flavourful, refreshing, visually appealing, and fun to make. So move over water, soda or coffee: there's a new kid in town. "Mocktails" - virgin drinks, spritzers, frozen drinks and punches - provide guests with a range of choices.

If you're having a dinner party, consider filling a large pitcher with water and adding fresh fruit such as strawberries, melons, mint leaves or thinly sliced English cucumber, which will infuse the water. Not only is this visually appealing, but it also provides a refreshing taste for guests of all ages. After dinner or other social occasions, consider offering guests a basket or tray of assorted packaged teabags including green, herbal and black teas.

You could also set up a dry bar, selecting ingredients and supplies for one or two creations, make a punch or use a combination of options to suit the occasion. Setting up a dry bar for non-alcoholic drinks is very similar to preparing a wet bar, with many of the same elements including mixes, garnishes, glassware and equipment.

Let your creative juices flow and use the following recipes as a guide to creating your own mocktails the next time you entertain. Cheers!
