Every Saturday morning during summer the people of Edmundston, NB, gather on Hill Street. Here they purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, quail eggs, salted herbs and bottles of jewel-like preserves, as well as craft items. The market began in 2008 with 12 to 15 vendors and this summer has grown to include 50 to 60 kiosks.

If you’re in the area be sure to stop in and enjoy a market staple—the traditional ployes, a delicious buckwheat pancake that’s been served in the Madawaska region for centuries. Enjoy it with butter and maple syrup, or spread on a local favourite, a delicious pork pâté called cretons.

On any given week you can also sample traditional Acadian music, the lively beat serving as a perfect backdrop to the festive atmosphere and joie de vivre.

The market runs from June through to September from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. but market organizers, Edmundston Centre Ville, are looking for a permanent home for the market to allow for an extended season.
