Pieces of paradise
There are times when we all need to step away from
our daily routines and
take some deep breaths.
Unwind here
I’m sitting near a great pile of driftwood. Waves crash onto the shore.
The glowing sun sets over the blue, blue expanse of the Northumberland
Strait. I sigh. My husband and I are the only human souls privy to a
show-stopping sunset that bathes everything—the twilight, crimson
cliffs and the rolling hay fields—in shimmering shades of red and gold
before finally succumbing to night.
“Aren’t we glad we live here?” I think, not able to imagine a more peaceful spot in the universe.
By happenstance and good fortune, a handful of tourists also find this
little piece of paradise every summer, tucked away on Cape Breton’s
western shore, just off the Ceilidh Trail. But it’s mostly a local
best-kept secret.
There are many such secrets in Atlantic Canada. I know, because I’ve
stumbled upon a few soul-inspiring places through the years.
Some are isolated and relatively unknown. Others are just unexpected
gems in an area I thought I knew. I could keep them all to myself, but
you’ve caught me in the mood for sharing.
