Having visited Point Pleasant Park in Halifax several times I was interested in your article “Lighting Standards” (January/February). I was fascinated to read that the lampposts at the Tower Road entrance came from Glasgow, Scotland—my birthplace.
On closer inspection of the photograph, I note that the embossing on the bases is the coat of arms for the City of Glasgow. You itemized some of the figures on it, which are:
“The tree that never grew,
The bird that never flew,
The fish that never swam and
The bell that never rang.”
The figure depicted is actually St. Mungo, who established a monastery on the banks of the Molendinar Burn, a tributary of the Clyde, in the 6th century. It is he who is said to have preached, “Lord, Let Glasgow Flourish....” It was later shortened to “Let Glasgow Flourish,” which is the City motto embossed across the bottom of the coat of arms.
Thanks for awakening old memories.
