Jay Underwood's article "A Train Runs Through It" (January/February 2007) was for my family a very nostalgic journey on a route we have taken annually by car for more than a half-century. Even with the speedy Cobequid Pass we still swing off onto the old Wentworth Valley road and enjoy the peace and tranquility of this nostalgic journey through rural Nova Scotia.
Since the early 1950s my family has made the journey to Ontario through
the Wentworth Valley. Going north our first stop was always the railway
overpass where we enjoyed a long cool drink of refreshing spring water.
Next we stopped at Folly Lake to enjoy the rugged scenery and the many
tidy little cabins and docks that dotted the opposite shoreline.
Invariably we had to stop at the gas station restaurant down in the
valley for a hamburger and Coke to quench the kid's hunger and thirst.
It is long gone but there remains a small motel and restaurant at the
base of Folly Hill where it is well worth stopping for a short rest or
repast. In the past we have often had a take-out and enjoyed a quiet
meal beside the brook in the lovely little park at the other end of the
valley.
Thanks so much for a story that has stirred in us some really great
memories of one of the most spectacular-and free-drives in picturesque
Nova Scotia.
