Making Hay PDF  | Print |

Thank you for the article on the Tantramar Marshes ("Revisiting Tantramar," January/February 2007).

I am reminded of a story told by the writer and humorist Will R. Bird to the Haliburton Club of the University of King's College more than 50 years ago.

He told of a tourist who stopped to chat with a local farmer near the Marshes. The tourist asked if it ever got windy on the Marshes, to which the Farmer answered, "Yup."

"Does it ever get too windy to make hay on the Marshes?" the tourist asked. "Yup," the farmer answered. "How can you tell if it is too windy?" To which the farmer answered, "Do you see that post over there?"

"Yes."

"Do you see the chain hanging from that post?"

"Yes."

"Well when that chain is sticking straight out then it is too windy to make hay on the Marshes!"

We love your magazine and have subscribed to it for our son who is now living in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont, but who longs for the Saltscapes of his childhood. He and his wife especially enjoy the recipes.
