Sound Fish Practice
I was pleased with the article “Domesticating our Codfish” (January/February)—it’s timely and true. Only correct and respectful use of our marine wildlife can possibly replenish any desired fish species. I am acquainted with a salmon-raising project locally that was supposed to do great things but was terminated after considerable wastage of money. Salmon raised in enclosures cannot nearly equal wild variety in quality. And a goodly number of the caged fish are reported to have escaped. Certainly that would happen with cod at some point. And there are negative effects to be realized when cod are cut off from open water.

For over 40 years I have been trying  to make all manners of politicians and bureaucrats aware of the need to protect and enhance the ability of watersheds associated with estuaries to accommodate species of desired—especially migrating—fish. I was aware of the capelin “give-away” preceding the collapse of our cod. How, I often ask myself, can one hope to support an endangered species if one removes its necessary support?
