Prepared for Atlantic Canadians, Saltscapes focuses on the active, rural lifestyle enjoyed in the region. It features stories and photographs on the people, places, getaways, history, hobbies, culture and lifestyle that help make this region unique.
As a lifestyles magazine, Saltscapes accepts only nonfiction materials. Editorial staff will consider any article, story idea, query or proposal on any topic that showcases the region. We expect all stories to be original works, carefully researched and of top literary quality. Unless otherwise negotiated, Saltscapes will purchase first North American print rights.
Story lengths vary. Some regular department pieces are only 400 words, feature articles average between 1,200 and 1,800 words. Although the final length of a piece will be determined by the editor after a query, proposal or story idea has been accepted, feel free to include an estimated word count in your correspondence. Fees are negotiated based on a writer's experience, story complexity etc. Payment is always on publication.
If you'd like to submit an idea:
Read our magazine. It may sound obvious, but you would be surprised how many people overlook this simple step. Take a look at the informal, yet clear and professional writing style favoured by our regular contributors. Our best writers evoke a "feeling" about their topics of choice-and about Atlantic Canada.
Our readers have many and varied interests; decide if your story idea will fit. Will it take readers somewhere they have never been? Educate them? Entertain? All Saltscapes articles must focus on things unique to this region and have a broad-based appeal to residents of all four Atlantic provinces. We avoid topics that are well covered in the mainstream media, preferring to look for unique angles, fresh approaches and good stories that have traditionally been overlooked. All our travel-related items are specific to this region. They include regular articles aimed at daytrips, weekend getaways and hiking trails...all within Atlantic Canada. The trick, however, is to make these items different from the tourism information already so abundantly available; to feature places and angles that make readers want to travel to a place that may be just around the corner.
Plan ahead. Remember that our printing and production schedules dictate that we work well in advance (in June we are already in production for our September issue, in the summer we are finalizing our Home for the Holidays agenda).
Remember that your query is your one attempt to sell a story. Show how you write, the approach you intend to use, and give a thorough outline of the details you plan to cover (including photographic possibilities). Attach recent clips of published works.
Story ideas and queries must be submitted in writing. They may be sent electronically to editor@saltscapes.com or via regular mail:

All formal queries will receive a response. Given the volume of materials we receive, we cannot always promise a speedy reply. Please be patient. We do promise a response.
Saltscapes accepts no responsibility for unsolicited manuscripts, artwork or photography and will return rejected material only when it is accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
When you submit your story:
Stories should be submitted electronically. We prefer Microsoft Word, but will accept any text file or materials pasted within the body of an e-mail.
All relevant supplemental materials, including photo captions, lists, and fact-checking sources are to be included.
If your query or proposal has been accepted by the editor, a deadline will have been assigned. All deadlines are to be strictly observed. Stories must be in the hands of the editor by 5 p.m. on the assigned date. Story use is always at the discretion of the editor, even on assigned materials. Saltscapes does not offer a kill fee.
