When I came across the recipe for Pastitsio Pie (“7th Annual Recipe Contest Winners,” January/February) my first thought was yum and my second thought was what a small world: my mother graduated from Middleton High School with Linda Cummings. And on top of that I grew up living across the street from her Aunt Claire and Uncle Gordon. I was so excited and wanted to make the recipe even more! It was absolutely delicious and is a new family favourite.

I wanted to show the slippers we made with recycled sweaters following the instructions in the November/December issue (“Happy Winter Feet”). I have a great group of friends who are always looking for something different to try. There were eight of us and what fun we had. We got one foot made the first night, and are looking forward to our next evening to finish the second slipper.

Having visited Point Pleasant Park in Halifax several times I was interested in your article “Lighting Standards” (January/February). I was fascinated to read that the lampposts at the Tower Road entrance came from Glasgow, Scotland—my birthplace.

The November/December issue of Saltscapes containing the recipe for Edgar’s Mincemeat (“The Toast of Christmases Past”) prompted me to go on a search in my late mother’s old cookbook. To my delight, I found the mincemeat recipe that was passed down from her grandmother (1848-1945) who, in turn, had received it from her mother.

My husband and I have been subscribing to Saltscapes for some time now. Along with National Geographic and Canadian Geographic magazines, it’s one of our favourites. We especially enjoy the articles about local communities—we’ve been using the magazine to add to our “places to visit when we retire” list. But I have a pet peeve: the lack of maps locating the places written about.
