Our region has a rich, story-telling tradition—and the winning photos
from our 2008 Amateur Photo Contest tell stories of their own
Our character is reflected in our water: sometimes calm,
sometimes rough and rocky, sometimes distant, always there. The
water in the winning images of our 2008 Amateur Photo Contest
captures our many East Coast moods—curious, reflective and constant.
The shots bring out the kid-near-the-ocean in all of us.
Winners stretch from the West to the East, from BC to NS. This suggests
that no matter where we settle, salt air always brings us home. The
pool of this year’s judges includes Greg Flasch, of Nikon, in
Toronto—Greg is proud of his honorary status as an Atlantic Canadian,
and owns a cottage near Howley, NL; Perry Jackson, Saltscapes’ staff
photographer, who has seen a goodly share of captivating regional
vignettes; and Shawn Dalton, Saltscapes’ creative and production
director, who has the near-impossible job to determine what images tell
the best stories each issue. Selecting winners from the “tousands and
tousands” of submissions was a challenge! We thank everyone who
participated. |

Do people ask for your “secret” recipes? Is your dinner party the talk of the town, your dessert the star of the potluck?
It’s always a good time to try new recipes and draw comfort from old favourites. Families and friends don’t need a special occasion to gather and reminisce—and food is central to this tradition.
