The Nova Scotia Chapter of Osteoporosis Canada works provincially to support the mandate of the national organization: to ensure people are informed about osteoporosis and can make knowledgeable decisions about their bone health, have access to care and support, and benefit from the research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease. 

Information is available through a toll-free line and website; also through brochures and fact sheets at health fairs and other events, through newsletters, public education sessions and health care providers. Speakers are available to address groups in many communities. The organization is also active with advocacy initiatives to ensure Nova Scotians have access to the best care.
 
The Bone China Tea is Osteoporosis Canada’s signature fundraising event held annually across the country in November, during osteoporosis month; it’s a formal tea and silent auction to support the group’s work and increase its profile, and raise awareness of osteoporosis.

It’s estimated that osteoporosis affects one in four women and one in eight men over the age of 50. Sixty thousand Nova Scotians have the disease. Approximately 20 per cent of people who have a hip fracture die from complications within the first year; many others require care in nursing homes. The Nova Scotia Chapter of Osteoporosis Canada, founded in 1994, continues to provide much needed education and support throughout the province.
